A General Practitioner will often have a long term relationship with a patient. General Practitioners assess a wide variety of medical conditions and, based on their knowledge, skill and experience, will either recommend treatment or make a decision to refer a patient for specialist help. As with all areas of clinical negligence, delay or failure to refer can have significant, long-lasting consequences for a patient and can, unfortunately, on rare occasions, be catastrophic.
Examples where claims might arise include:
Failure to diagnose possible strokes/brain haemorrhages;
Failure to refer for emergency medical intervention, for example in the case of meningitis or cardiac arrest;
Failure to refer to a specialist for investigation or treatment;
Late diagnosis of a medical condition or injury;
Failure to consider the results of investigations and act appropriately;
Prescribing inappropriate medication leading to Injury;
Failure in carrying out minor plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures.
