Hip replacement*

Hip replacements are among the most common orthopaedic procedures.

Hip replacements can be problematic for a number of reasons. These include:

The most common problem with hip replacements is that they begin to loosen over time.   Infections and breakages of implants are uncommon but can cause potentially severe complications.

Most hip replacements, properly carried out, last an average of 20-25 years.

Some hip replacements will last longer, while other hip replacements can fail much sooner.

The concern about some metal-on-metal hip replacements, specifically one implant made by a Johnson & Johnson company, called DePuy Orthopaedics, is that implants caused significant problems within the first few years after replacement.  In some patients, this issue has been severe, causing permanent injury.

Patients with these metal-on-metal implants have also been found to have high levels of metal ions in their blood stream.

If you have this specific type of metal-on-metal hip replacement implant, you should regularly see your doctor for routine evaluation of your hip joint.

Patients with other types of metal-on-metal hip replacement implants should also be seen regularly by their surgeon for continued evaluation.
